Sclerotherapy
is a technique which is very effective in the treatment of
unwanted leg veins. It involves injecting a solution
into dilated and visible veins in order to cause them to scar
on the inside. Once injected, the vein becomes
‘plugged’, blocking the flow of blood within it and
therefore making it invisible. Because of the many
connections between surface veins and deep veins, this does
not lead to any significant circulatory problems.
Normally a number of treatment sessions are required to
obtain a good cosmetic result. Some varicose vein
problems are best treated surgically and it is important for
you to consult with your LaserMed Physician in order to arrive
at an optimal treatment strategy.
What
are Varicose Veins?
Varicose
veins are veins which have enlarged and which do not
circulate blood effectively. Some Varicose veins may even
all blood to flow backwards inappropriately. Visible
varicose veins belong to the superficial system of veins
which is responsible for the return of about 10% of blood
flow from the legs. Most of the blood (90%) is returned by
way of the deep veins which are not visible. Varicose veins
constitute a progressive problem which normally worsens with
time. It can, however, be controlled by a well-planned
treatment program.
What
are Spider Veins?
Spider
veins are simply small, dilated veins which are visible
because of the superficiality in the skin: they may be blue,
red or purple. These are very common and may be present with
or without larger varicose veins.
What
causes Varicose Veins?
The
primary cause is heredity. If your mother or grandmother had
varicose veins, it is more likely that you will also. If
such is the case, preventative measures become very
important. Factors known to aggravate varicose veins include
pregnancy, heat, long periods of standing, and obesity.
Healthy veins may become varicose if injured or
inflamed.
